The Papacy: A Third Response to Stephen Ray

An Examination of Stephen Ray’s Rebuttal to the Web Page Articles of William Webster and a
Refutation of His Misrepresentations of the Teachings of Vatican I and the Writings of Augustine and John Chrysostom

By William Webster

I recently posted a response on this web page to comments on my books made by Roman Catholic, Stephen Ray, in his book on the papacy titled, Upon This Rock, released in the Spring of 1999. He subsequently responded with a 215 page rebuttal. His response can be accessed at his web page at www.catholic-convert.com/webster/index.html. Due to time constraints, I have only been able to respond to three major sections of his rebuttal: The Introduction and Historiography, Augustine and John Chrysostom. If time permits I will respond to the remainder.

While these interchanges may seem overly lengthy, they provide excellent insight into the Roman Catholic apologetic and how fundamentalist Roman Catholics typically approach the facts of history and deal with the writings of the Church fathers. This forum can provide interested inquirors with an objective standard by which to gauge the legitimacy of the claims of either side. These articles can be accessed at:
